 Forte dei Marmi developed as a summer beach resort towards the end of the 19th century and today is one of the favourite destinations of the elite tourists. Its beautiful vilas are plunged in the vegetation of the pine forest surrounding the town.

Forte dei Marmi owes its name to the fact that in ancient times it was the port from which the marbles from the nearby Alps took off, and also to the Forte (Fortress) ordered by Leopoldo I in 1788 to defend the port.

It's 35 km northwest of Lucca and 65 km nortwest of Florence.
