Consistent with this, in some parts of Sicily, March 19 is tradition to invite the poor to lunch. In other areas of the festival coincides with the feast at the end of winter as rites, burning the fallow fields to work on and squares are lit bonfires to be overcome with a leap. In some regions of central and southern sweet for this festival is the zeppole (or if zeppolella mini version) from the ancient Roman origins to accompany the feast of liberalism, which was held in the same period. Father's Day, as we know it today began in the early decades of the twentieth century to complement Mother's Day to celebrate fathers and fatherhood in general. The feast is celebrated on various dates throughout the world, it is often accompanied by delivery of a gift to his father.
The first time was documented that seems to be celebrated July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, at the local Methodist church.
Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was the first person to call for the formalization of the party, without being aware of the celebrations of Fairmont, inspired by the sermon heard in church on Mother's Day 1909, she organized the festival for the first time on June 191910 in Spokane, Washington. The party was organized in the month of June because that month marked the birthday of the father of Mrs. Dodd, a veteran of the Civil War.
The time generally varies from country to country. In countries that follow the American tradition, the festival is held the third Sunday of June.
In some countries, the festival is associated with fathers in their national role, as in Russia where it is celebrated as the feast of the defenders of the homeland (День защитника Отечества).
